It is with immense pleasure that I welcome our students, their parents, guardians as well as friends and all stakeholders to the Paul University website. We commend you all to the unflinching love of the Almighty God and the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, in Whom all things subsist.
Paul University, Awka is the brain-child of the Bishops of the five Ecclesiastical Provinces (currently comprising 55 Dioceses) of the Anglican Communion east of the Niger, whose vision to establish a novel University became a reality on November 3, 2009. It was on that date that the University received, from the Federal Government, the Provisional License to operate as a full-fledged private University. This was followed by an inaugural ceremony on November 30, 2009.
The take-off site of Paul University is the premises of former St. Paul’s College, Awka, founded by the Church Missionary Society (CMS), an evangelical arm of the Church of England (Anglican), in 1904 as a college for the training of Church workers and teachers of various categories. The campus is thus a hallowed ground, providing an ideal academic environment where students and staff, under Christian discipline and administrative guidance, are maximally focused in their academic pursuits with little distracted. The permanent site of the University is at Oji River, on the Awka-Enugu expressway, and plans are under way for its development.
The goalof the University is grounded in the records of excellent posted by our forebearers, the Anglican Church, in pioneering primary and secondary education in Nigeria, and in inculcating sound morals along with impeccable intellectual preparation of students. Anglican schools in the past, with a structured supervisory system, laid great emphasis on the total man – his intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development, and on his discipline and the fear of God, which is indeed, the beginning of all wisdom.
It is these accumulated experiences that the Bishops sought to bring to bear on tertiary education in Nigeria, ensuring that when Paul University puts its stamp of achievement, in both character and learning, on any of her products, a truly trained and well-adjusted individual has emerged to join in the undeclared war to save the soul of our great country, Nigeria. As our motto says,“Here am I send me”,our products are made “Ready to be sent.”
Currently Paul University offers twenty-six programmes of study in three faculties, namely, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and the Institute of Theology. Our curriculum lays emphasis on academic achievements, and acquisition of practical and entrepreneurial skills, which enhances the versatility of our students in the world of work and job creation. We have on our staff list highly experienced and erudite faculty, carefully selected as true role models for our students.
The University is anchored on the core values of spirituality, excellence, diligence, and moral rectitude. On the foundation of the Protestant Ethics of hard work, prudence, justice, truth and honor, we hope, under God, to propel the University to a higher pedestal from its present position. Paul University would be an enviable institution, a model for faith-based universities in the country, with predictable academic calendar and highly dedicated staff, and producing enterprising graduates, sound in learning and character, future leaders who would drive development and enterprise in the country.
As Paul University grows, our website will form a gateway and an exchange medium for our students, staff and proprietors to dialogue, inform, educate and exchange information with our various admirers, colleagues, alumni, benefactors and friends. Therefore this website promises to be a rich medium of exchange. Paul University, as a budding world class institution has initiated several national and international linkages and interuniversity cooperation agreements in order to encourage student and staff exchange, research cooperation and staff development. These will be greatly facilitated through the medium of Information & Communication Technology (ICT), with the backbone of Web Technology.
I wish you a very happy interaction and we look forward to your participation in whatever way you think can be mutually beneficial.
